In 2015 two black holes collided a billion light years away. The crash sent a ripple through space itself, and it reached Earth. The detector is two tunnels, four kilometres each, with a laser bouncing between mirrors. When the wave passed, one arm stretched and the other shrank, by less than a ten thousandth the width of a proton. It is the smallest thing anyone has ever measured. And we heard it as a chirp.
