A cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice has been turned into a telescope. Not for light, but for neutrinos, particles that pass straight through planets. Five thousand sensors hang on cables frozen two kilometres deep. When a neutrino finally clips an atom, it leaves a flash of blue light, and the sensors time that flash to the nanosecond. From the timing alone they reconstruct which direction in the universe it came from. It points at the sky by looking down.
